Privacy Policy

Last updated: 6 July 2026

Nitrify is built on a simple principle: your data belongs to you, stays on your device, and isn't shared with anyone — including me. This policy explains exactly what that means in practice.

Data Nitrify stores on your device

The app keeps the following information locally, using Apple's SwiftData framework:

  • Tanks (name, volume, type, setup date, water-change cadence)
  • Water tests (date, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and optional pH, temperature, GH, KH, phosphate, test kit, note, and an optional photo)
  • Water changes, maintenance tasks, and dosing entries
  • App preferences (theme, reminder settings)

iCloud sync

If you're signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive enabled, Nitrify uses Apple's CloudKit service to sync your data across your own Apple devices. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by Apple, lives in your private iCloud container, and is never accessible to me or any third party. Apple's privacy policy governs this sync — see apple.com/legal/privacy.

You can disable iCloud sync for Nitrify at any time in iOS Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud.

Camera & photos

Nitrify can attach a photo to a water test so you can see how your tank looked at each reading. It requests camera access (to snap one) and photo-library access (to pick one). Photos you add are downscaled to keep them small and stored inside the app's local SwiftData database. They sync via CloudKit if enabled. They are never uploaded to any server of mine, and Nitrify never writes to your photo library.

Notifications

Nitrify uses iOS local notifications for optional reminders — test reminders, water-change reminders, and maintenance reminders. Each is scheduled entirely on your device at a time you choose, and no reminder fires in the middle of the night. No information about them leaves your phone.

What Nitrify does NOT do

  • No analytics SDKs (no Firebase, Amplitude, Mixpanel, or similar)
  • No advertising networks or ad SDKs
  • No crash-reporting services (Apple's built-in reporter respects your settings)
  • No user accounts, logins, or sign-ups
  • No server of mine that Nitrify talks to
  • No selling or sharing of any data, because there is no data to sell or share

In-app purchase

Nitrify offers a one-time $6.99 purchase to unlock Pro features. The purchase is handled entirely by Apple's App Store via StoreKit, with no third-party payment processor and no personally identifying information leaving your device. The unlock is restored on any device signed into the same Apple ID.

Not veterinary or medical advice

Nitrify is a logging and interpretation tool — not a diagnostic device. The Safe / Watch / Act verdicts and target ranges are general guidance for typical freshwater community tanks, not a diagnosis of your specific water or livestock. During cycling, ammonia and nitrite are high by design. Always use your own judgement and, for livestock health concerns, consult an aquatic vet or a trusted local fish store.

Children

Nitrify is intended for general audiences (aquarium keepers). It does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children under 13.
